As University of Hawaii gears up for another school year, students protesting the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope atop Maunakea have options to attend class without leaving the mountain.

With new law in effect, albizia fight continues

A spokeswoman for the Big Island Invasive Species Council said the first explorers of a new law allowing landowners to remove potentially dangerous albizia trees from neighboring properties could be community associations in Puna.

Engineer: Restoration of water to lower Puna not feasible

The county Department of Water Supply has no current plans to restore water service to Kapoho and the area around Pohoiki as lower Puna continues to recover from the 2018 eruption of Kilauea volcano, but was not “shutting the door” on a possible restoration in the future.

Raises planned for off-duty police

Hawaii Island police officers who provide services for private companies or other government agencies on their off-time could see payment for their services go up by as much as 50% over the next two years, under a special duty pay schedule that’s the focus of upcoming public hearings.

Astronomers to return to Maunakea

Astronomers with the Maunakea Observatories will attempt to return to the summit for the first time in four weeks thanks to a new agreement with protesters occupying Maunakea Access Road.

Pahoa man released from custody in uncle’s death

Police released a 26-year-old Pohoiki man who had been arrested in the apparent beating death of his uncle.

Astronomers with the Maunakea Observatories will attempt to return to the summit for the first time in four weeks thanks to a new agreement with protesters occupying Maunakea Access Road.

During the week of July 29-Aug. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

Re-striping of Highway 130 causes ‘Carmageddon’

The Hawaii Department of Transportation started a re-striping project on Keaau-Pahoa Road (Route 130) between Shower Drive and Kaloli Drive in Keaau this morning in preparation for the morning northbound contraflow.

More complete numbers coming for TMT-related costs

The Hawaii County Council Finance Committee on Tuesday discussed a possible financial report of the county’s expenses relating to the ongoing standoff on Maunakea, but meaningful numbers will not be available until later this month.
