Since 15 August 2019, the Hawaii Police Department has issued 610 citations for various traffic infractions on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (The Saddle Road).

Additionally, police officers have arrested seven suspects for 13 collective offenses on the cross-island highway.

“According to police officers assigned to be in place for the TMT protestor blockade and encampment on Mauna Kea access road have stepped up traffic enforcement efforts on the highway, which is commonly known as Saddle Road. A police statement issued today said this in response to two traffic collisions that have occurred in the vicinity or related to the event. Police say the enforcement effort is intended to ensure the safety of the motorist and protestors alike, with the current situation of pedestrians and vehicles congregating on the roadway shoulders of a 60 mph traffic zone.”

“A message from COUNTY OF HAWAII

This is Hawaii County Civil Defense with a Tropical Depression Flossie update message for Sunday, August 4 at 6 in the evening.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has downgraded Flossie to a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 35 MPH.  At 5 PM, the center of Flossie was approximately 350 miles east of Hilo moving west at 13 miles per hour.

 

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center High Surf Warning for east facing shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect through Monday.  A High Surf Warning means large breaking surf, significant shore break, and dangerous currents that could cause significant injury or death.

 

The following public safety measures are in effect;

  • Onekahakaha Beach Park remains closed through today due to dangerous surf conditions.
  • Camping permits and pavilion rentals for Onekahakaha, Whittington, and Punaluu Beach Parks are cancelled for today.
  • The Bayfront Parking lot on Kamehameha Avenue will remain closed until further notice.
  • The Hele-On buses will continue to pick-up passengers behind the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

As Tropical Depression Flossie nears Hawaii Island, please be prepared for conditions of heavy rain and possible flooding, especially for the windward side of Hawaii Island beginning early morning Monday.

“A message from COUNTY OF HAWAII

This is Hawaii County Civil Defense with a Tropical Storm update for Friday, August 2, at 6 in the morning.  As of 5:00 am Friday the center of Tropical Storm Erick was approximately 250 miles SW of Hilo at latitude 16.8 N and longitude 157.4 W, moving in a WNW direction at a speed of about 14 miles per hour.  Strongest sustained winds are estimated at 50 miles per hour with gusts near 60 miles per hour.  Be aware that tropical storms are erratic and can change speed, direction and intensity quickly.  Due to the position, strength, and movement of Tropical Storm Erick the following advisories have been issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC):

1. High Surf Warning for East facing shores of Hawaii Island.

2. Wind Advisory for Hawaii Island.

3. Flash Flood Watch for Hawaii Island.

4. Flood Advisory for S. Hilo, Puna, and Ka`u Districts.

The Following public safety measures and recommendations are now in effect:

1. Public Works has sand available at their baseyards.  Please bring sandbags and shovel with you.  If your property is flooding call 935-0031 for assistance.

2. Isaac Hale, Punaluu, and Whittington beach parks are closed.  Camping permits for these parks are cancelled for this weekend.  South Point road is restricted to local traffic only.  The Bayfront parking lot on Kamehameha Ave. is closed.  Hele-on pick-up is at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.  Please park between the Butler buildings behind the auditorium.

3.  Expect flooding conditions throughout the day.  Be cautious when driving as conditions may be dangerous and roads may close at anytime.
