Last night, residents vented numerous concerns during a public meeting to discuss the new draft Environmental Impact Statement for Puna Geothermal Venture’s proposed “Repower Project.”

In other news, the state of Hawai’i is developing its first plan to bridge the digital divide; the legendary voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa is preparing to embark on a four-year circumnavigation of the Pacific; and the first commercial driver license course exclusively for wāhine in Hawai’i is being launched by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.

Volcano Watch: Volcano monitoring from space: InSAR time series success in Alaska

In a recent “Volcano Watch” article, we learned about a remote sensing technique known as InSAR. This method of using satellite radar signals to detect changes to the surface of the earth has been very beneficial for monitoring of active volcanoes, especially in remote locations where it is difficult to install ground based geophysical sensors. One such place where InSAR recently proved instrumental in detecting deformation of a volcano previously considered inactive was in Southeast Alaska.

The first commercial driver license course exclusively for wāhine in Hawai’i is being launched by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, in partnership with the American Association of University Women Honolulu Branch. The Hawaiian Trades Academy commercial driver license training program for the Wāhine Cohort starts in July with limited seats.
