FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2023

Aloha Friday Big Island,

In news, a 35-year-old suicidal man was arrested after a more than 4-hour armed standoff with police in Aloha Estates in Puna. A man who was 21 when he stabbed another person and robbed a car in 2018 was sentenced to 20 years in prison. And police are still asking for help locating a woman wanted in a custodial dispute and her 5-year-old daughter.

A new university study has a theory about what exactly is ‘Oumuamua (which roughly translates to “scout” in Hawaiian), the first known interstellar object to visit the solar system. And itʻs not that it is an alien Mothership.

Tonight, there is a special evening program, The ʻAlalā Project: Restoring Hawaiʻi’s Native Crow to the Wild, at Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park; and we have another interesting Volcano Watch column.

And if you havenʻt already, today is the last day to take the Big Island Now 30-second poll in which we asked: “What is your favorite Hawaiian food?” So far, 1,465 people have answered. Not winning: Spam musubi, although it has gotten votes. The poll is on our homepage.

Mahalo for reading.

The strange object, later called ‘Oumuamua (which roughly translates to “scout” in Hawaiian), was the first known interstellar object to visit the solar system. Now, a new study has a theory of what it is.
