In other news, a West Hawai’i octopus farm was issued a cease and desist letter from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. There is no record of Kanaloa Octopus Farm having ever applied or been granted an Aquaculture License or a Special Activity Permit for the possession/rearing of the Day Octopus, a regulated aquatic life species.
Kanaloa Octopus Farm in West Hawaiʻi receives cease and desist letter from state
After receiving complaints that an aquaculture research facility in West Hawaiʻi was in possession and breeding the Day Octopus — a regulated aquatic life species — without the required permits, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources issued a cease and desist letter.
Last month, Kanaloa Octopus Farm was sent the letter, which said the state’s Division of Aquatic Resources learned the facility “is propagating Octopus cyanea and attempting to rear juvenile individuals.”

Kailua-Kona’s Tahitian Dance competition is back.
The 10th annual Heiva I Hawai‘i will take place on Feb. 18-19 at Hale Halawai on Ali‘i Drive. Presented by Te ‘E‘a o Te Turama and Fun to Jump Kona the two-day fete will host groups from around Hawai‘i Island and share in traditional Tahitian drum dances to the melodic ‘Ahuroa.

In the melting of cultures in Hawaiʻi, some words get lost in translation. While tako is a common name for the octopus in the Aloha State, it is of Japanese origin. The Hawaiian word for octopus is heʻe.
Hawaiʻi Community Lending receives $1.5 million to assist people in homeownership
Hawaiʻi Pacific Health and The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation are providing a combined $1.5 million in social-impact loans and grants to support Hawaiʻi Community Lending, a nonprofit community development financial institution dedicated to helping low-income households become homeowners.
Hawaiʻi Community Lending projects this funding will support 200 low-income families in their pursuit of housing in Hawaiʻi, with the potential to help more than 900 families over the next three years.

Think Pink: Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival celebrates 30th anniversary on Saturday By Nathan Christophel
Since its beginning, the Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival has been all about the delicate pink blooms on the cherry trees at Church Row Park in the North Hawai‘i community of about 11,000 people. Oftentimes, a crown of snow on Maunakea provides a picturesque backdrop.
In 1994, the festival’s first program cover featured a graphic of a blooming cherry tree branch on a pink background with the theme: “Hanami: A Viewing of the Flowers in Springtime.”
Kāko’o Haleakalā calls for the removal of telescopes following diesel fuel spill on Maui
The Hawaiian rights group, Kākoʻo Haleakalā, is calling for the removal of “all telescopes” from both Haleakalā on Maui and Maunakea on Hawaiʻi Island. This comes following recent reports of a 700 gallon diesel fuel spill at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex near the summit of Haleakalā.
