HONOLULU — Following the brutal beating of an inmate by four corrections officers in 2015 at Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center in Hilo, no facility policy changes were made in relation to the incident.
The Hawai‘i Department of Public Safety says its policies and procedures are proven, evidence-based and work — as long as everyone follows them.
Health care centers now open to keiki at 3 West Hawai’i public schools
The Hawai’i Island Community Health Center has launched school-based health centers at three West Hawai’i schools in an effort to expand health care to keiki.
The health centers will provide on-site care at Hōnaunau Elementary, and Kealakehe Elementary and Intermediate Schools. The health centers will present services including well child exams, visits for illness or injury, behavioral health care and dental services, according to a press release from Hawaii Island Community Health Center.

A disappearing act of colossal proportions has taken place at on the East Side of Kaua‘i, after county, state and federal personnel worked through the weekend to remove a 120,000-pound sperm whale from Lydgate Beach Park — and bury it at a secret location.
Despite the whale’s complete removal by the end of Sunday – when nothing remained but strips of yellow caution tape, several “shark sighted” signs and four excavators – Lydgate Beach Park will remain closed until Feb. 1.
‘The Voice’ of University of Hawai’i Athletics Jim Leahey has died
Jim Leahey, “The Voice” of University of Hawai’i Athletics for over 40 years, passed away Monday at the age of 80.
Leahey is survived by his wife Toni, three children and one grandchild. Services are pending.
Parker School in Waimea breaks ground on multi-million dollar learning facility
Parker School broke ground a new 21,000-square-foot multi-use facility last week that will include classroom space, a gym and a robotics lab.
School leaders and members of the community held a Hawaiian blessing ceremony for The SMART Center on Jan. 26. This $16 million capital improvement project on Parker’s 20-acre Waimea campus is the largest in the school’s 47-year history.
