Members of the public and law enforcement stood in line Friday afternoon at the Hawai‘i Civic Center to congratulate and welcome “Chief Ben.”
What’s happening with Big Island’s Kīlauea eruption now in its third week?
The latest eruption of Kīlauea Volcano on the Big Island, which began at about 4:34 p.m. on Jan. 5, continues at the summit caldera — and safely contained within Halemaʻumaʻu crater.
Activity is concentrated in a large lava lake in the eastern half of the crater and a smaller lake to the west, in the basin of the 2021-2022 lava lake, according to the Jan. 20 update of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Small arms training/hunting this month at Pōhakuloa Training Area on Hawaiʻi Island
There will be small arms training throughout January at Pōhakuloa Training Area on the Big Island, the US Army Garrison announced.
It will include convoys traveling from and to Kawaihae Dock, anticipated to be on the morning of Jan. 21 and throughout the day on Jan. 28.
Gov. Green orders flags at half-staff for funeral services of Princess Kawānanakoa
Hawaiʻi Gov. The princess died on Dec. 11, 2022 at age 96. Her body will be lying in state at ‘Iolani Palace on Sunday for the public memorial and on Monday there will be her private funeral at Mauna ‘Ala.
Stacey Bello named superintendent of Ka‘ū-Kea‘au-Pāhoa complex area schools
Interim superintendents at four complex areas in the state were approved by the Hawai‘i State Board of Education to permanently fill the positions.
Stacey Bello was named superintendent of Ka‘ū-Kea‘au-Pāhoa Complex Area. Superintendents were also named at Baldwin-Kekaulike-Kūlanihāko‘i-Maui, Castle-Kahuku, Pearl City-Waipahu.
Regal Keauhou Stadium 7 in Kona on list to close due to Cineworld’s bankruptcy
In a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on Tuesday, Cineworld detailed the plan to reject the leases starting in February of 39 of its more than 500 Regal theaters across the United States. The list includes the Regal Keauhou Stadium 7 in Kailua-Kona.
It is the only theater on the chopping block that is located in the state of Hawaiʻi.
