Manuel “Manny” Carvalho was an avid tennis player and a longtime Cub Scout. At age 11, the Hilo resident had just begun 6th grade at Waiakea Intermediate School on the Big Island.
Now he was old enough to attend Boy Scouts of America events. His first was at Camp Honokāia near Honoka‘a on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2022. It also was his last.

And, there was no mistaking this was the State Legislature of the Aloha State. There was Hawaiian music, hula, poi making, chanting, a multitude of aloha wear and the occasional bellow from a conch shell. Some legislatorsʻ faces could barely be seen with all the lei around their necks.
Search continues for missing Big Island fisherman; friends hold out hope
An extensive 72-hour search for Captain Cook fisherman Mark Knittle, who fell overboard in waters off Hōnaunau Bay early Sunday, will continue through the night and into Thursday.
As of Wednesday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard and Hawaiʻi Fire Department conducted 20 searches over the course of 65 hours, covering 515 miles, but with no signs of the 63-year-old. Coast Guard officials said Wednesday night they will reassess the situation on Thursday.

4 Hawaiʻi Island correctional officers sentenced for beating an inmate, covering it up
Four former correctional officers at the Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center in Hilo have been sentenced for their roles in the assault of an inmate and participation in a multi-year conspiracy to cover up the beating, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Jordan DeMattos, 30, the youngest of the four officers involved, previously accepted responsibility for his crimes by pleading guilty, and testified against his co-defendants at a trial last summer. He was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison.
