Big Island native Ilima Shim had no idea she was nominated for one of the most difficult yet amazing experiences of her life until she learned she was one of 12 contestants chosen for season 4 of the CBS reality TV show “Tough as Nails.”
Now the single mom is showing her 10-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son, along with the rest of the country, that by working hard and following your dreams, you can achieve anything.

Big Island police are asking the public for assistance with locating a missing “at risk” woman.
The Hawai‘i Police Department says 48-year-old Tonia Smith was last seen at 1 p.m. Friday on ‘Ama‘u Road in Hilo. She is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, 284 pounds, wearing a purple and tan tie-dye dress. She also is in need of medication.
Hawaiʻi’s national parks free on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
The National Park Service will provide free admission on five dates in 2023 to two Hawaiʻi national parks on the Big Island: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.

Pedestrian killed in Kea‘au traffic incident
A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning in a traffic collision in Kea‘au.
At 5:09 a.m. Saturday, officers with the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Puna Patrol responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 130 in the vicinity of the 3-mile marker. The vehicle’s driver reported that something struck her vehicle windshield and shattered it.
Pāhoa woman killed in Kea‘au traffic crash
Big Island police are investigating after a Pāhoa woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday night in Kea‘au.
The Hawai‘i Police Department says the crash happened about 10 p.m. Friday on Auli‘i Street, near the intersection with 41st Avenue.
