Good Saturday morning, Big Island!

The Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo will be back in all its glory in 2023 to celebrate its 60th anniversary of showcasing hula and Hawaiian culture — and the world can’t wait. This year will mark the first time since 2019 that the festival will be back at full capacity, and organizers, volunteers and sponsors are are excited it’s returning to normal.
While DUI arrests declined in 2022 compared to the year prior, authorities report fatal crashes increased. Big Island police report there were 32 fatal crashes last year on island roadways, resulting in 34 fatalities, representing an increase of 23.1% for fatal crashes and 30.8% for fatalities compared to 2021.
More than a quarter of all missing girls in the Hawai‘i today are Native Hawaiian. According to a new report, those missing girls are victims of a complex “invisible crisis” rooted in gender-based violence and the islands’ colonization by Western powers hundreds of years ago.
Emergency crews on Maui airlifted a man to safety just before noon Friday after he was knocked down by a large wave at the “Olivine Pools” in Kahakuloa. He and two women, all described as visitors in their mid-20s, were knocked over by the wave and were clinging to the rocks along the shore. Fire officials say one woman suffered lacerations, one woman had an arm injury and the man had injuries to his head and neck.
