A working group is advising the state to move up the deadline by 20 years for converting the worst cesspools in an effort to reduce the 53 million gallons of untreated sewage contaminating Hawaiʻiʻs groundwater and surface water each day.
The Hawaiʻi Police Department is investigating the death of a man thought to be in his 70s after he reportedly jumped to his death from a bridge in downtown Hilo. Big Island police also report that a Puna woman was arrested and charged in connection with an allegedly violent domestic dispute between her and her boyfriend stemming from an argument about the death of their infant son.
A Mountain View man faces drug and firearms charges in relation to an Aug. 15 traffic stop on Volcano Highway, during which he is alleged to have fled the scene prior to being apprehended.
In other news, two adults and three juveniles were arrested following a large brawl Wednesday afternoon in downtown Hilo, during which, according to police, it was reported that people were yelling, throwing rocks and brandishing weapons, including a knife and possibly a rifle.

Working Group: Most contaminating Hawaiʻi cesspools should be converted by 2030
In an effort to reduce the 53 million gallons of untreated sewage contaminating the State of Hawaiʻiʻs groundwater and surface waters each day, the Cesspool Conversion Working Group advised moving up the deadline for converting the worst offenders by 20 years, to 2030.
The group — which has been working on the issue for four years — presented its findings on Wednesday to the state House Committee on Energy & Environmental Protection and the Senate Committee on Agriculture & Environment in a joint virtual informational briefing.
Man reportedly jumps to his death off Pu‘u‘eo Bridge in Hilo
Big Island police are investigating after a man reportedly jumped to his death off a bridge in downtown Hilo.
The Hawai‘i Police Department initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation in connection with the incident that took place the evening of Jan. 4. Shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, South Hilo patrol officers and Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel responded to the area of the Pu‘u‘eo Bridge after receiving numerous reports that a man had jumped from the bridge into the Wailuku River.
Police: Puna woman charged following reported violent domestic dispute
A Puna woman is being charged with several offenses following a violent domestic altercation on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Hawai‘i Police Department, 21-year-old Yasmine Michelle Lilia Butterfield of Kalapana was arrested and charged following the Dec. 31 incident that stemmed from an argument between Butterfield and her boyfriend regarding the recent death of their 5-month-old son.
Mountain View man faces drug, firearms charges
A Puna man faces several drug and firearms charges in connection with an incident in August 2022.
According to the Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 32-year-old Daesyn Pacheco-Muragin of Mountain View was charged via felony information in relation to an Aug. 15 traffic stop on Volcano Highway, during which he is alleged to have fled the scene prior to being apprehended.

The Hawai‘i Police Department’s central dispatch received multiple calls just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday reporting an altercation in the area of the 100 block of Kino‘ole Street in which it was reported that people were yelling, throwing rocks and brandishing weapons, including a knife and possibly a rifle.
High bacteria count notification issued at Kailua Pier; brown water advisory in effect for part of Kohala Coast
The Hawai‘i Department of Health is notifying the public that the waters at two Big Island locations are being monitored for possible contamination.
The Health Department is retesting waters at Kailua Pier in Kailua-Kona after bacteria levels of 207 per 100 mL were detected during routine beach monitoring. While the beach has historically met the acceptable threshold level and there is no known source of fecal contamination, the department is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample taken during recent monitoring and has collected another.
Driver who hits pedestrian in Puna dies following altercation with unknown person
On Friday evening, 53-year-old Ryan Kuualoha Ka‘awaloa was driving a green Chevrolet multi-purpose vehicle when he hit a pedestrian in Puna who was walking along the roadway.
Witnesses told Hawai’i Island police Kaʻawaloa immediately stopped his vehicle following the incident. An altercation between between Ka‘awaloa and an unknown person or persons ensued. It is not clear if that person was the pedestrian who was hit. Kaʻawaloa collapsed near his car and was pronounced dead less than 90 minutes later.
Construction to begin on 100,000-gallon water storage tank for homestead lots in Kaʻū
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, through its contractor Isemoto Contracting Co., is scheduled to begin construction on a new 100,000-gallon water storage tank as part of a project to connect Pastoral homestead lots awarded to native Hawaiians in the mid-1980s to county water service.
The project includes a water filling station with a spigot to be placed in the Kamāʻoa subdivision on Hawaiian Home Lands.
