Waipi’o Valley Road remains closed to most people for cleanup from the winter storm.

The only road in and out of the Big Island’s Waipiʻo Valley remains closed as crews with the Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works continue their cleanup efforts following the Kona Low storm early last week.

Big Island travelers feel impacts of Southwest Airlines’s widespread service disruption By Tiffany DeMasters

County again offers tree-cycling to help make the holidays greener

Big Island residents are encouraged to tree-cycle their holiday trees and kadomatsu decorations again this year to keep them out of the Hawai‘i County landfill. The service is available through Jan. 15, 2023, except during the annual closure of solid waste facilities on New Year’s Day.

Federal agency proposes 275,000 acres in Hawaiʻi as critical habitat for ʻiʻiwi

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing approximately 275,647 acres of land in Hawaiʻi as critical habitat for ʻiʻiwi, also known as scarlet honeycreeper, which is a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

The proposed federal, state and private lands are on the Big Island Maui and Kauaʻi.

Police: 17 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Dec. 19-25

Used motor oil recycling program to lose drop-off site starting in January

Lex Brodie’s Tire and Service in Hilo will no longer be participating in the Do-It-Yourself Used Motor Oil Recycling Program, effective Jan. 1.

County officials ask the public not to abandon used motor oil at this site. There are various other businesses throughout the island that continue to offer the used motor oil recycling program.
