New police chief to be sworn in Jan. 17

When Honolulu Police Maj. Benjamin Moszkowicz is sworn in on Jan. 17 as chief of the Hawaii Police Department, he’ll be Big Island’s first top cop who wasn’t born in Hawaii.

A rising star

An early Christmas present came to the Anahu-Ambrosio family in South Kona when their son, a Konawaena standout Hezekiah signed with Division I University of Nevada, securing his space in Big Island athletes that have made it to the ranks.

CDP action committees revived: County seeks Kona and Puna members in particular

Some 18 months after the county called a halt to filling citizen boards that advise the government on planning and design because the administration wanted to take a hard look at how the boards can best be used, the county has filled some of the regional boards but is actively searching for volunteers for the Kona and Puna boards in particular.

Dozens of colleagues, community members, law enforcement and EMS gathered Thursday at Old Kona Airport Park to pay tribute to the three Hawaii Life Flight crew who perished after their plane went down in the Alenuihaha channel Dec. 15 while on a flight from Maui to Waimea.

Police nab 19 for suspected drunken driving

Hawaii Police Department officers arrested 19 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Dec. 12 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

Storm takes a toll

About 800 Big Island residents were estimated to still be without power Tuesday afternoon following the “Kona low” storm that hit Monday.
