The storms have passed and the cleanup continues.

The County of Hawaiʻi is seeking applicants for its Community Development Plan Action Committees for Kona and Puna.

U.S. Rep. Kahele introduces Hawaiian Home Lands Preservation Act

U.S. Rep. Kaialiʻi Kahele (HI-02) introduced the Hawaiian Home Lands Preservation Act, a bill to reduce the blood quantum requirement for successorship to 1/32nd for current lessees and thousands of applicants and their successors on the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands Applicant Wait List.

The act is critical legislation for the preservation, protection, and restoration of the sovereign rights of native Hawaiian people, according to Rep. Kahele.

Lightning strike ignites brush fire within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Fire crews are battling a small brush fire within Volcanoes National Park that was ignited by a lightning strike Tuesday. The blaze is reported at 30% containment.

Hilina Pali Road is closed from the gate past Kulanaokuaiki Campground to the Hilina Pali Lookout due to fire suppression efforts to extinguish a 5-acre wildfire. Only authorized vehicles are permitted until further notice. Kaʻaha Trail is also closed.

Hawai‘i Island police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating 14-year-old Aiden Becker, who was reported as a runaway.

Becker was last seen in the area of North Glenwood Road in Mountain View, on Dec. 20, 2022, at 7:30 p.m.

Governor Josh Green, M.D. authorized the emergency use of the Hawaiʻi Army Guard helicopters — and the select crews — to temporarily support Hawaii Life Flight after one of its aircraft and crew went missing Thursday in the ʻAlenuihāhā Channel between Maui and the Big Island.

Hawaiian Electric works to restore power following Big Island storm By Tiffany DeMasters

This story was updated at 12:12 p.m. on Dec. 21.

Hawaiian Electric currently reports 800 customers without power in the communities of Honoka’a, Ahualoa and Ocean View. Crews are working as quickly as possible to safely restore power, and anticipate restoration to be completed by Friday.
