Today, we have a story on yesterday’s public Police Commission meeting to interview the four finalists for the vacant police chief position. The commission meets again today in Kona to complete the public interviewing process.
We also have police-related stories about a Hilo man charged with abuse of his teen daughter and the search for two men involved in separate robbery and theft cases. Police also need the public’s help to locate a missing female teen and missing female woman.
We have the latest on the Mauna Loa eruption. Is it over? Well, it’s getting close to being done. Already, some state recreation areas that were closed due to the eruption are reopened.

Public interviews have begun for Hawaii County Police chief
On Monday, the Hawai’i County Police Commission interviewed the four finalists for the vacant position of chief during a public 5 1/2-hour special meeting in the Hilo County Council Chambers.
Candidates Paul Applegate, Sherry Bird, Edward G. Ignacio and Benjamin T. Moszkowicz were peppered with more than 20 questions, some submitted by the public.
Hilo man charged following reported domestic incident with teen daughter
A 44-year-old Hilo man faces several abuse and firearms charges following a reported domestic-related incident with his 17-year-old daughter last week.
Jacob Walter Umemoto’s charges include abuse of a family member, owning/possessing a prohibited firearm and prohibited ammunition.
Mauna Loa eruption Day 15: Is it over?
Tuesday, at 9:35 a.m., the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s status report said the Northeast Rift Zone eruption of Mauna Loa may still be active at the main fissure 3 vent, but “all 2022 lava flows appear to be inactive.”
So is the eruption over? Not yet, according to scientists, because some active spatter was observed.

The mature female humpback whale has made headlines recently for her resilience in the face of insurmountable odds, completing a more than 4,000-mile migration with a severe spinal injury.
Open casting call on Big Island for lead child actress aged 10-13, good swimmer
The University of Southern California team is conducting an in-person open casting call for its 20-minute thesis film “Two Breaths,” which will be shot on the Big Island in early 2023.
The team from the USC School of Cinematic Arts is looking for a lead female child actor, 10 to 13 years old and any ethnicity. No acting experience is necessary but strong swimming skills are required.
Abigail Kawānanakoa, known as ‘Last Hawaiian Princess,’ dies Sunday at 96
Gov. Josh Green has ordered state flags at half-staff to honor the late Abigail Kawānanakoa, who passed on Dec. 11, 2022. The Native Hawaiian royal descendant, known by many as the last Hawaiian princess, was 96 years old.
Kawānanakoa had no official title but her lineage included the royal family that once ruled the islands and an Irish businessman who became one of Hawaiʻi’s largest landowners.
Police seek ID of suspect in reported robbery at Hilo business
Big Island police are asking the public if anyone knows the identity of the person responsible for a reported robbery last week at a Hilo business.
According to the Hawai‘i Police Department, Hilo patrol officers responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. Dec. 6 to a retail business in the 300 block of Kīlauea Avenue, where a store associate reported a male suspect fled the business with a stolen backpack and other items.
Police seek help identifying man involved in store theft in Waikōloa
Hawai‘i Island police are requesting the public’s assistance identifying an individual allegedly involved in a theft on Dec 1 at 7:53 p.m. at a retail store in Waikōloa.
Police Seek Runaway 17-year-old girl missing since October
Big Island police are asking for the public’s help with locating a 17-year-old girl who was reported as a runaway and has been missing since the middle of October.
Police are searching for Tanaiyah Hao-Kallio, who was last seen Oct. 18 near the intersection of Makala Boulevard and Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona. She is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
33-year-old woman from Waimea reported missing by family
Hawai‘i Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating 33-year-old Mary Kaniho of Waimea. She was reported missing by her family.
Kaniho was last contacted on Dec. 9, 2022, in the Waimea area. She is described as Hawaiian, 5 feet 1 inch tall, 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has tattoos on the right side of her face and neck.
Dry conditions persist through November in some parts of Big Island; others saw near or above average rainfall
After two months of the 2022-23 wet season, some portions of the state remain under significant drought, with Maui County and the Big Island having the worst conditions, according to the monthly rainfall summary for November from the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Big Island rainfall totals for the year through the end of last month were near or below average at most rain gauges, said the report prepared by Senior Service Hydrologist Kevin Kodama. The U.S. Geological Survey gauge at Honoli‘i Stream in East Hawai‘i had the highest year-to-date rainfall total for the island with 155.47 inches, or 73% of its average.
HVO: “Mauna Loa is no longer erupting”, volcano alert level reduced
Because of the reduced activity, the USGS lowered the Volcano Alert Level for ground-based hazards from Watch to Advisory, and the Aviation Color Code was reduced from Orange to Yellow this morning.
