Mauna Loa’s eruption is still active, but scientists said on Sunday lava no longer was moving outside or down the mountain. Big Island Now will have the latest volcano update later Monday morning.
Today, we also have an interesting story about volcanos in close proximity erupting at the same time, including in Indonesia and in an African nation.
On a sad note, a body was discovered along the Hilo Bay shoreline on Sunday. Police have yet to identify the man.

Body discovered on Hilo Bay shoreline
The body of a middle-aged man was discovered Sunday along the Hilo Bay shoreline near Isles in Hilo.
Hilo patrol officers and Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel responded to the shoreline area fronting a business establishment in the 100 block of Lihiwai Street shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police have yet to identify the man.
Mauna Loa eruption Day 14: Volcano continues to simmer down
Mauna Loa’s eruption may still be active, but it’s now contained within the cinder cone formed around the Fissure 3 vent on the volcano’s Northeast Rift Zone.
“There is a hole in the cone that is incandescent and lighting up the fume cloud [above] at night, so it makes that fairly visible up on the hillside,” Ken Hon, scientist-in-charge at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, told reporters Sunday morning. “But other than that … It’s no longer producing lava that is moving outside and down the mountain.”

Over the past two weeks, visitors to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island have had the rare opportunity to view two eruptions. They can see molten rock spewing and degassing within the lava lake in Halemaʻumaʻu on Kīlauea; and about 18 miles away, the bright red/organge glow of lava can be seen down the slopes of Mauna Loa.
“This dual eruption in a once-in-a-lifetime event for many of us, to see Pele [the Goddess of volcanoes and fire] in two different places at once,” said Jessica Ferracane, Public Affairs Specialist for the popular national park.
Wind advisory until 6 p.m. Dec. 12 for portions of Big Island
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory with a new strong area of high-pressure building far north of the state that will keep breezy to locally windy trades in place on Dec. 12.
East winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected with local localized gusts of 45 mph for portions of the Big Island, Maui and Lānaʻi are expected until 6 p.m. Monday.
Office of Hawaiian Affairs elect new leadership Dec. 12
Today, the newly sworn-in trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs will hold a meeting at 9 a.m. to select the board’s leadership.
Trustees elected in 2022 were inducted into their terms of office at an investiture ceremony on Dec. 8 at Kawaiahaʻo Church in Honolulu.
UH-Hilo women’s soccer coaches named West Region Staff of the Year
It’s not just the student-athletes on the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s soccer team being honored in the postseason. The coaching staff also is garnering accolades.
After repeating as Pacific West Conference champions and earning back-to-back conference Coach of the Year honors, the Vulcans also add another title to their 2022 awards. United Soccer Coaches has named the UH-Hilo women’s soccer team coaching staff as West Region Staff of the Year.
Big Island police co-sponsor Lonoikamakahiki Fishing Tournament
The Hawai‘i Police Activities League recently helped keiki in Hilo create their own fish stories.
The Hilo Community Policing Section, in partnership with Maha Village Neighborhood Watch, co-sponsored the Lonoikamakahiki Catch-and-Release Fishing Tournament on Nov. 19 at Lehia Beach Park in Keaukaha.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and what better way to celebrate than to bring holiday joy — and gifts — to keiki in need.
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i hosted its second “Heroes and Helpers” the morning of Dec. 10 at Hilo Target. The organization’s annual event was its largest to date, with 68 young children and teens from the Hilo area participating.
Water shutoff scheduled Dec. 13 for portion of Laupāhoehoe
Residents in a portion of Laupāhoehoe are being notified that their water will be shut off temporarily one day this week as crews work to perform a waterline replacement on the bridge going to Laupāhoehoe Point.
Water will be shut off between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Dec. 13 along Laupāhoehoe Point Road, Jardine Road, Loyola Road and Stevens Road. Upon resumption of service, waterlines will be flushed and cleaned, during which time customers might notice turbid and/or discolored water.
