Boat owner fined $43K for damaging live coral and rock in West Hawai‘i waters
The owner of a 54-foot sailing catamaran has been fined more than $43,000 by the state for damaging a total of nearly 160 live coral colonies and pieces of live rock last year in West Hawai‘i waters off the Big Island.
The Hawai‘i Board of Land and Natural Resources issued the fine for the owner of the vessel called Avalanche in connection with a social media report May 28, 2021, saying the boat anchored on top of live coral outside Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor. The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources recommended the administrative penalty of $43,417 to compensate the state for damage to natural resources on public lands and the cost of its investigation.
Police: Pāhoa man charged following reported Hilo bank robbery
A Puna man is being charged in connection with a reported bank robbery earlier this week in the 500 block of Kīlauea Avenue in Hilo.
Big Island police arrested 52-year-old John Jason McCrary of Pāhoa following the Dec. 6 incident. After conferring with the Hawai‘i County prosecutor’s office, detectives with the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section on Friday charged McCrary with:

The search for a missing 60-year-old Washington state woman who went missing Dec. 8 while snorkeling in waters off South Maui was was called off at noon Dec. 9 after teams from the Maui Fire Department, Maui Ocean Safety and Hawai’i Department of Land and Natural Resources Enforcement were unable to locate her.
1 man arrested after a search warrant at Hilo home yields large amounts of meth, cocaine
A Hilo man is facing various drug and firearm charges after search warrant on a residence in East Hawaii led to the discovery of over 1.5 pounds of methamphetamine, over 0.5 pounds of cocaine and a revolver.
Sixty-nine-year-old Jay Hoapili Kailimai was arrested on Wednesday after Hawai’i police officers with the Area I Vice Section executed a residential narcotics’ search warrant upon a Hoaloha Street residence in Hilo and recovered nearly 700 grams of methamphetamine, nearly 300 grams of cocaine, a Colt Diamondback revolver, and $6,800 in U.S. currency.
Mauna Loa Eruption Day 12: Threat to Daniel K. Inouye Highway over for now
The leading edge of the Mauna Loa eruption has stalled and is currently no longer a threat to Daniel K. Inouye Highway.
The inactive main flow front remains stalled about 1.7 miles from the highway, also known as Saddle Road. As of 7 a.m., activity at the fissure 3 vent significantly reduced producing low fountains that feed lava flows extending only 1.2 miles from the vent. The channels below this point appear drained of lava and probably no longer feed the main flow front.

Driven by relatively low inventory, Maui County condominiums last month hit an all-time high for median sales price at $856,250. The staggering median comes as sales continue to slow due to high mortgage rates and out-of-reach home prices, according to the latest report from Realtors Association of Maui.
