High surf prompts closure of Hilo roadways
Portions of both Bayfront Highway and Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo are closed this morning due to high surf.
Hawaii Police Department issued an email at 2:45 a.m. indicating the closure between Ponahawai and Pauahi Streets. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area using Kilauea Avenue. The detour is in place till about 8 a.m.

Grace, his wife and infant child slept in a tent while the four oldest kids ages 2, 4, 7 and 10 shared one room of their aunty’s tiny house.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) sets the Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for volcanoes in Hawai‘i and American Samoa. Currently, Kīlauea is erupting and is at WATCH/ORANGE, Mauna Loa is in elevated unrest and is at ADVISORY/YELLOW and the remaining six monitored volcanoes are at NORMAL/GREEN.
Fishpond access road to be closed at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park
The public is advised that the Kaloko Fishpond and parking lot will be closed for coconut tree trimming next week to ensure safety.
The access road and parking lot will be closed from 8-11 a.m. Nov. 28. The gravel road, Ala Nui Kaloko, is located off Highway 19 between mile markers 96 and 97.
Applications being accepted for Waipiʻo Valley Emergency Road Closure advisory committee
Applications are now being accepted for the Mayor’s Advisory Committee for Waipiʻo Valley’s Emergency Road Closure.
Hawaiʻi County Mayor Mitch Roth is standing up the advisory committee to facilitate communication of the significant community concerns and possible solutions relating to road safety and access to the roadway through the emergency period.
Puna man charged with terroristic threatening and firearms offenses
Rodney Ka‘ahu, 45 of Kiha, was arrested and charged with terroristic threatening, felon in possession and firearms offenses, according to Hawaiʻi County Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Nov. 21, 2022 in the Leilani Estates subdivision.
Contest filed to void election results of the Wailuku Council race
Maui County Council candidate Noelani Ahia and 30 Maui County voters have filed an complaint with the Hawai’i Supreme Court seeking to void the results of the Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū County Council race, and hold a new election.
