Happy Thanksgiving, Big Island. We hope your Turkey Day menu includes fun, family and of course all the food! We also want you to stay safe. Be sure to check the weather today, as high winds and surf are forecast.

On today’s plate of stories, a Big Island restaurant is partnering with the Salvation Army to make sure kūpuna have a hot Thanksgiving meal, the Best Friends Animal Society offers some tips to keep your furry family members safe during Turkey Day, shopkeepers in Kona are excited for the first Black Friday and Small Business Saturday in two years that won’t have any pandemic-related restrictions and despite the beginning of the wet season in October, some places on the island remained pretty dry, but rainbows returned by the end of the month.

Jackie Rey’s and Salvation Army team up again to deliver Thanksgiving meals to elderly

For more than a decade, Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill in Kona has partnered with the Salvation Army Kona Corps to provide Thanksgiving meals to people in need in the community.

The tradition continues today. The restaurant, with help from volunteers and Salvation Army, is delivering 500 to 600 meals to the elderly and shut-ins.

Kona shopkeepers excited for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

After two years of in-person capacity restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Big Island businesses are banking on customers returning en masse for one of the biggest holiday shopping weekends of the year.

Dry October for Big Island ends with much needed precipitation and return of rainbow season By Nathan Christophel

Gloria Silva-Sampaio’s 1,550-gallon water catchment tank in Puna was less than half full at one point in October, and she had to use part of that water for her five sheep, two dogs and four cats to drink.

Without water coming into the catchment tank on a consistent basis, mosquitoes and their larvae became so bad that she had to add bleach to kill them. The dry weather also was causing her grass to get burned by sheep urine.

Pāhoa man arrested, charged following reported shooting incident in Puna

A Pāhoa man has been arrested and charged with terroristic threatening, numerous firearm-related offenses and others in connection with a violent altercation Monday morning in a Puna subdivision.

The Hawai‘i Police Department says 45-year-old Kiha Rodney Stone Kaahu was arrested Monday following a reported shooting incident at a residence on Luana Street in Leilani Estates. After conferring with the Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, detectives on Wednesday charged Kaahu with the following offenses:
