A brush fire ignited in Pahala Sunday afternoon. Roads in the area remain closed and two houses were evacuated as a precaution. There is a wind advisory today till 6 p.m. for more of the Big Island so avoid travel through Pahala if possible.
Two volunteers were honored posthumously for the creation of the Waimea Nature Park 23 years ago. It continues to be a beloved area in the South Kohala community.
And the public is invited to a briefing about a proposed update to vacation rental regulations.

Firefighters to resume battling brush fire in Pāhala on Monday morning
On Sunday evening, Capt. Chris Carvalho with the Hawaiʻi Fire Department, said a brush fire that started at midday in the rural town of Pāhala on the island’s east side was not contained and would be monitored overnight to ensure it did not spread into residential areas. Firefighting operations are resuming this morning.
Officials said Sunday evening that approximately 66 acres had burned so far.
Wind advisory issued for most of Big island through Monday at 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for most areas of the Big Island through 6 p.m. on Monday.
The advisory also is for portions of Oʻahu, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Maui and Molokaʻi.

Twenty-three years ago, volunteers transformed a 10-acre green space in the heart of Waimea from a tangled mess of invasive trees with ground covered in Christmas berry into a beloved community park called Ulu La‘au.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources honored posthumous two volunteers: Carol Hendricks, worked for six years to get the state to lease the land for the park, and Leningrad Elarionoff, who brought colorful ʻōhi‘a trees to the park.
Haleakalā National Park releases short documentary on saving forest birds
Haleakalā National Park released a a short documentary “Heart of Maui,” which follows two biologists working to save Hawaiʻi’s critically endangered forest birds.
The 7.5-minute film describes the cause of the birds’ catastrophic decline and what is at risk if action is not taken soon.
New chainsaw drone attachment deployed to fight rapid ʻōhiʻa death
The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is on the cutting edge of the fight against a scourge that has killed thousands of acres of ʻōhiʻa lehua trees on the Big Island.
UH-Hilo geographer and professor Ryan Perroy and his research team developed a new aerial chainsaw drone attachment that could help save ʻōhiʻa trees from the deadly fungal pathogen that causes rapid ʻōhiʻa death. The device is now being put to the test, sampling tree branch samples for diagnostic laboratory testing and other purposes.
Public invited to briefing about proposed update to vacation rental regulations
The public is invited to an online informational meeting next week about a proposed update to Hawai‘i County’s short-term vacation rental regulations.
The proposed update will be introduced in January 2023 by Hawai‘i County Council members Ashley Kierkiewicz and Heather Kimball, who will host the Nov. 21 meeting via Zoom from 5:30-6:30 p.m. To participate, community members must register for a unique Zoom login.
Community and county step up to help stock Food Basket shelves for holidays
Federally-funded food shipped from the mainland typically makes up 85% of the supply for the Big Islandʻs nonprofit Food Basket, but now executive director Kristin Frost Albrecht said it only accounts for about 10% due to national supply chain issues.
This shortfall has occurred at a time when the number of people who rely on the Big Island’s food bank to help feed themselves and their families has remained steady at about 45,00 to 50,000 individuals per month.
