You know it’s hot when you don’t even have to move to break a sweat.
A new record high temperature of 89 degrees was recorded Monday at Hilo International Airport, surpassing the previous record of 88 degrees set in 1987 and tied in 1988 and 2020.
Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center among 8 nonprofits to receive environmental grants from Hawaiian Electric
Hawaiian Electric has awarded a total of $83,000 in environmental grants and donations to eight local nonprofit organizations contributing to the long-term protection and sustainability of Hawaiʻi’s unique ecosystem.
The funds will support habitat conservation and restoration, reforestation, native and protected species recovery, and community engagement programs.
COVID weekly update: 89 new cases reported on Big Island
The state Department of Health reported 1,047 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, Oct. 12, bringing the statewide total to 358,279. Five new fatalities were reported.
A total of 89 new infections were reported Wednesday on the Big Island. A map documenting new cases by district throughout all islands can be accessed at the DOH website.
Hawaiʻi County received 44 applications for police chief
Forty-four people have applied for the position of Hawaiʻi County’s police chief, which has been vacant since the retirement of Chief Paul Ferreira on Sept. 1.
Deputy Chief Kenneth Bugado is serving as interim chief while the Hawaiʻi County Police Commission selects a new chief.
Decomposed body discovered in Puna home
Police think foul play could be involved in the death of a male victim whose badly decomposing body was discovered Tuesday afternoon at a Puna home on the Big Island.
Hawai‘i Island police are investigating after Puna patrol officers responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. to a residence on Lehua Street in Mountain View and discovered the decomposing body on a floor inside.
Rare plant thought to be extinct discovered on Kamehameha Schools land near Kona
A small population of Delissea argutidentata, a plant thought to be extinct in the wild, was discovered in a crater on Kamehameha Schools land in a remote section of mauka Kona on the Big Island.
The discovery was announced today by Kamehameha Schools, the State of Hawai’i Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Three Mountain Alliance.
