19 Motorists Arrested for DUI

During the week of Aug. 8-14, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 632 DUI arrests compared with 697 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.3 percent.

Federal Grant Lands Big Island New Electric Buses

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation announced Tuesday, Aug. 16 that 21 alternative energy and low-emission buses will be deployed across the state thanks to the “Buses and Bus Facilities” and “Low or No Emission” grants under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Narrowed-Down Affordable Housing Audit Recommended for Approval By Tom Hasslinger

A pared-down request by a West Hawai‘i council member to have the county auditor take a deeper look into the marred county Office of Housing and Community Development’s use of affordable housing credits was recommended for approval by the county’s finance committee.

The County Council’s Finance subcommittee on Tuesday, Aug. 16 recommended the full council approve of Resolution 467 with an amendment that narrows the audit down to look at an annual comprehensive list of affordable housing credits outstanding, issued, transferred, and redeemed.

HPD Seeks Public Help Finding Woman Who Escaped Police Custody

Hawai‘i Island police are asking for the public’s help in locating 34-year-old Jenna Martin who escaped from police custody on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at approximately 6:25 p.m.

Martin is described as a local female, around 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, 130 to 140 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen in the Pāhoa area wearing a light brown t-shirt, black and camouflaged colored leggings, and barefoot.

Loitering, Boozing Prompting Council to Consider Temporary Stub-Street Closure By Tom Hasslinger

The Hawai‘i County Council will consider closing a stub-street at Ka‘eka Street in North Kona to reduce loitering, drinking and other unseemly behavior.

Resolution 478-22 authorizes the temporary closure of the southern roadway stub-out, which are portions of a street used as an extension to an adjacent property that may be developed in the future.

Kula man held on $755K bail after he allegedly opened fire at a Haʻikū home

A Kula man was arrested and held on $755,000 bail for allegedly opening fire at a Haʻikū home on Monday afternoon. Police say 55-year-old Shawn Medeiros allegedly shot numerous rounds at the home before fleeing.
