Volcano Watch: Kīlauea’s Summit Lava Lake Continues to be Quietly Remarkable
Volcano Watch is a weekly article and activity update written by U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists and affiliates.
The ongoing eruption at the summit of Kīlauea hasn’t made the news recently, but that doesn’t mean the recent eruptive activity hasn’t been noteworthy. It’s just been operating quietly in the background, without much fanfare.
‘Our Kuleana’: Daughters of Hawai‘i Working to Ensure Royal Banyan Tree Continues to Watch Over Kona By Nathan Christophel
A Big Island nonprofit whose mission is rooted in preserving the ways of old Hawai‘i is taking steps to ensure an iconic tree on the grounds of Hulihe‘e Palace in Kailua-Kona continues to watch over the community for generations to come.
The Daughters of Hawai‘i is raising funds to help keep the Royal Banyan Tree in front of the palace on Ali‘i Drive healthy and vibrant. According to Regent Manu Powers, the ficus is in dire need of a trimming. Funds raised will also be used for an extended maintenance program for the tree.
DOH Reports Monkeypox Case in Maui County
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has identified one additional case of monkeypox, the office stated on Thursday, Aug. 4. This brings the total number of cases in Hawaiʻi since June 3 to 12. The individual is a Maui resident whose case is associated with travel outside of Hawaiʻi.
“The risk to most Hawaiʻi residents remains low, but action now is essential for protecting public health,” said Deputy State Epidemiologist Dr. Nathan Tan. “We continue to ensure that case investigation continues, and that testing and vaccination are available—especially in communities that have been disproportionately impacted by this outbreak.”
50-Yard Perimeter Set Around Hawaiian Monk Seal and Pup on O‘ahu Beach
The DLNR Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement has enforced a 50-yard cordon, or perimeter, around Hawaiian monk seal Rocky and her pup at Kaimana Beach on O‘ahu as of Thursday morning.
This is a government operation to protect public safety and the safety of the monk seals. On Tuesday, DOCARE announced officers are maintaining an around-the-clock presence to protect people and seals, where for the third time in five years a mother seal is nursing a pup, prior to it weaning.
