Walk to End Family Homelessness Set for Aug. 6 in Hilo

Interfaith Communities in Action will be holding a FUNdraising Walk at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium to support their signature fund “Hale ka Po’e Keiki,” or homes for children.

This fund was established in January 2022 to support local non-profit organizations helping East Hawai‘i community end family homelessness. Habitat for Humanity Hawai‘i Island is their 2022 recipient.

Domestic Abuse Suspect Accused of Brandishing Firearm During Reported Confrontation By Tiffany DeMasters

A Hilo man accused of brandishing a firearm at two 16-year-olds after assaulting a woman outside a Hilo apartment is slated to appear for a preliminary hearing in District Court Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty-five-year-old Jerome Thompson is facing six counts stemming from the July 14 incident at the Hale Ulu Hoi III Apartments on Laukapu Street. He appeared for an initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Monday, July 18, on charges of abuse of a family or household member, first-degree terroristic threatening, permits to acquire, alteration of identification marks prohibited, place to keep pistol or revolver, and registration mandatory.

Police Renew Request for Missing Teen

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for the public’s assistance in locating 14-year-old Bella Gaseta, of Mountain View, who was reported as a runaway.

Gaseta was last seen at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 3 wearing a pink sweatshirt, sweatpants, and shoes in the 11-2200 block of Ali‘i Wao Road (Jungle King Avenue) in the Fern Forest subdivision of Mountain View.

HVNP: Wildfire 100% Contained

The power line wildfire on the southeast flank of Mauna Loa in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is 100% contained and is holding at 42.5 acres in size, HVNP stated in a news release Tuesday, July 19.

Mauna Loa Road remains closed to all public use, and only authorized vehicles are allowed past the gate at Kīpukapuaulu until further notice. Firefighters are working to reduce nearly two miles of hose lay around the fire, and the presence of fire personnel, heavy equipment and vehicles on the road requires its continued temporary closure. Utility crews are conducting inspections and performing tree trimming in the fire area.

HPD Revising Gun Carry Permits in Light of SCOTUS Decision By Tom Hasslinger

The Hawai‘i Police Department, like other departments around the state, is revising its permitting application process for people to carry firearms in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on a landmark case out of New York.

The High Court’s 6-3 decision in the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen on July 7 ruled that the state violated the complainants’ 14th Amendment right to carry a firearm for self-defense when it denied a pair of applicants their request.
