Darby Continues to Weaken on Westward Trek South of Big Island

Hurricane Darby is forecast to continue weakening as it makes its westward trek to the south of the Big Island, according to the 5 p.m. advisory from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center on Thursday, July 14.

Darby is expected to become a tropical storm by Friday, July 15, and further weaken to a post-tropical cyclone by Saturday, July 16, before dissipating.

Kalanianaole Ave. Nighttime Work Hours Extended

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation informed Keaukaha motorists of a change in a nighttime pavement resurfacing and reconstruction project.

The work is requiring a single lane closure of Kalanianaole Avenue, between Kamehameha Avenue and Kauhane Avenue, and began on July 5.

Midweek Power Outage Affects More Than 2,000 Customers in Hilo By Nathan Christophel

More than 2,000 electric customers in a portion of Hilo were without power for nearly two hours Wednesday night, July 13, because of a tree falling on power lines.

According to the Hawaiian Electric – Hawai‘i Island Twitter account, the outage started sometime around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. It encompassed an area from Aipuni Street to Akolea Road in the Kaumana area and affected 2,165 customers. The tweet also said a first responder was on their way to investigate the outage.

Preliminary Hearing Scheduled for Hilo Man Accused of Assaulting Elderly Victim By Tiffany DeMasters

A Hilo District Court judge maintained bail for a 27-year-old man accused of beating an elderly man in downtown Hilo earlier this week.

Chad Kalenakai Gahan Armitage Jr. appeared in court Wednesday for his initial appearance on charges of two counts of first-degree assault and second-degree robbery. Armitage pleaded not guilty, and Judge Bruce Larson maintained bail at $75,000.
