Police Investigating Murder in Hawaiian Beaches; Suspect Taken Into Custody

Big Island police are investigating a case that has been classified as second-degree murder in a Puna subdivision.

According to a media release from the Hawai’i Police Department, Puna patrol officers responded shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, to a residence on Kawakawa Street in Hawaiian Beaches for a report of an elderly man seated in a wheelchair and bleeding from his neck.

Big Island Police Remind Residents About Fireworks Rules, Offer Safety Tips

In an effort to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July weekend, Big Island police are reminding the public about the rules governing the use of fireworks.

According to state law, anyone purchasing, possessing, storing, setting off, igniting or discharging aerial devices, display fireworks or other pyrotechnics without a valid permit could face felony charges.

Native Hawaiian High-Schoolers Immersed in Science, More at UH-Mānoa

Nearly 20 haumāna from high schools throughout the islands and the mainland are being immersed in science, Native Hawaiian culture and more as part of a 12-day summer residential program at a University of Hawaiʻi campus on Oʻahu.

Eighteen students are wrapping up the Summer Institute at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Hosted by Nā Pua Noʻeau UH-Mānoa, the program is part of a continued push to increase the number of Native Hawaiian students who attend and graduate from UH campuses. The Summer Institute provides interactive learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and math that is rooted in cultural identity.

KS Hawaiʻi Student Wins 2022 Congressional Art Competition

A student from Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi on the Big Island was named the winner from Hawaiʻi’s second U.S. congressional district of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition.

U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele announced Wednesday, June 29, that the winning artwork was created by Luluka Brown-Spielman, a junior at KS Hawaiʻi. Her piece expresses her interpretation of the relationship between man and his ancestors.

18 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of June 20-26, police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
