Documents detail harrowing shotgun confrontation

Three officers assigned to the Hilo Special Enforcement Unit struggled to take a loaded sawed-off shotgun away from a probationer in a violent roadway confrontation last week in Hawaiian Acres, according to court documents filed by police.

Police arrest 17 for DUI

During the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

Hawaii stun gun ban ends Jan. 1

Hawaii Police Department Chief Paul Ferreira said law enforcers are “gearing up” for Jan. 1, 2022, when most private citizens 21 or older will be allowed to possess and carry a Taser or electric stun gun.

Police warn of phone scam

Police are warning the public about recent phone scams in which attempts are being made to obtain money from individuals and businesses.

HVO lowers Kilauea alert level

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Monday lowered Kilauea’s volcano alert level to WATCH, and its aviation color code to ORANGE, to reflect “the less-hazardous nature of the ongoing eruption.” The volcano began erupting on Sept. 29 for the first time since May. The eruption is contained to Halema‘uma‘u crater within the volcano’s summit caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
