Council advances budget

Stark philosophical differences among County Council members coupled with limited funds and a lot of funding requests led to some tense moments Thursday that threatened to blow up a special session on the budget but ultimately culminated in compromise.

Police arrest 17 for DUI

During the week of May 10-16, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. None were younger than 21.

UH-Hilo faces budget cuts

The University of Hawaii at Hilo will face cuts to its general fund during the next two fiscal years if the biennium budget approved by the state Legislature gets the green light from Gov. David Ige.

Firefighters kept busy

The Hawaii Fire Department was kept busy with a structure fire in North Kohala on Sunday and a brush fire in Ka‘u on Monday.
