State epidemiologist Park leaves DOH

HONOLULU — The state epidemiologist who has been blamed for slowing Hawaii’s coronavirus response has left the Department of Health. Dr. Sarah Park’s last day with the department was Dec. 31.

Schatz announces school grants

Public schools serving low-income students in Hawaii will receive more than $56.5 million in federal funding for the 2021-22 school year to support teacher professional development, additional educators, new technology and other academic programs, announced U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz earlier this week.

Police arrest 25 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 25-31, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. None were younger than 21.

Police: 2 runaway teenagers found

Police report that 16-year-old Brandon Ahia of Keaau, who had been reported as a runaway, has been found in good health in Puna.

Saiki: UH not fit to manage mountain

The University of Hawaii’s director of Maunakea stewardship said the university will continue its process to renew the master lease for the mountain, which hosts several of the world’s premier astronomical observatories.
