Hawaiʻi representative proposes work-from-home grant to cut down traffic
Hawaiʻi State Representative Takashi Ohno introduced a bill on Wednesday that aims to establish a remote work transition grant program to help small businesses convert to virtual working environments. Small businesses who are eligible for the grant will be able to use the funds for costs associated with setting up home offices, such as purchasing laptops or paying a portion of their employees’ electricity bills.
Land nominations sought for cultural, historical preservation
The County of Hawai‘i Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission (PONC) is seeking suggestions from the public regarding lands that should be preserved because of cultural or historical significance. Properties might qualify for preservation because they offer education, public access to beaches or mountains, cultural significance, natural resources, and outdoor recreation.
Hawaiʻi health officials reported two Oʻahu deaths and 100 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, including 65 on Oʻahu, 21 on Maui, seven on the Big Island, one on Lānaʻi, and six Hawaiʻi residents diagnosed out of state. Approximately 127,419 vaccine doses have been administered as of Wednesday, according to the health department.
7 Hawaii National Guard members who deployed to DC test positive for COVID-19
Some 200 Hawaii National Guard members were part of the DC deployment. Medical experts have noted that the Guard members were forced to congregate in spaces without masks, including while they ate and slept. The other Guard members who already tested negative are still completing a 14-day quarantine. The seven Guard members who tested positive are asymptomatic and remain in isolation.

World Surf League calls for protection of 30% of the ocean by 2030
The World Surf League (WSL) today announces the We Are One Ocean campaign calling for the protection of 30% of our one ocean by 2030, or 30×30. The WSL encourages people around the world to join the global movement in support of 30×30 and sign the We Are One Ocean petition at weareoneocean.org. Those who sign the petition will be part of a growing international community urging world leaders to adopt 30×30 at an upcoming United Nations Convention where these targets will be decided.
