The Department of Land and Natural Resources is seeking public comment on its plan to halt erosion and flooding of the Fort DeRussy, Halekulani, Royal Hawaiian and Kūhiō Beach shores. Plans for seawater air conditioning dropped

One week after Kīlauea volcano began erupting, the lava lake at Halema‘uma‘u crater has risen to 581 feet and contains about 4.8 billion gallons of molten rock. Sulfur dioxide emission rates continued to drop over the weekend. Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

760-acre brush fire destroys a church in Olowalu Village
On Saturday night, fire destroyed a church and two vehicles and damaged a home. As of 5 p.m. Sunday, officials said the brush fire in Olowalu had burned 760 acres, while the Kula fire had burned at least 7 acres. Both fires are thought to be 95% contained, according to the Maui Fire Department. Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Hawaii News Now. Maui Now.

New 178-unit affordable rental project proposed
Catholic Charities Hawai’i is proposing a $66 million affordable rental project in Kahului on the heels of its senior affordable rental development, also in Kahului. Maui News.

Billionaire owner of Lāna‘i to develop affordable housing
Pūlama Lāna‘i, established by Larry Ellison after he bought 97% of the island in 2012, plans to develop 150 rental homes starting next year. Just over half the homes would be reserved for low-income households, with rents anticipated to be as low as $603 a month. Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
