Doubling tropical cyclone risk to Hawaii possible

Global warming will intensify landfalling tropical cyclones of a category three or higher in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while suppressing the formation of weaker events. In Hawaii, model simulations show a doubling of the risk of landfalling tropical cyclones, if CO2 concentrations double.

Waipio Valley pedestrian ban booted

It’s back to the drawing board for a bill prohibiting pedestrian access to Waipio Valley, after County Council members Wednesday raised constitutionality issues and the effect closing hiking there would have on other valleys, such as Pololu Valley in North Kohala.

No reprieve from vog in the forecast

A thick layer of vog continues to blanket West Hawaii areas for a third day following the start of an eruption Sunday night at Kilauea Volcano.

HVO: Kilauea lava lake rises to more than 500 feet

Areas around the summit of Kilauea on Wednesday were blanketed in high levels of sulfur dioxide and particulates that reached levels established by the Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous, according to a statement from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
