Influx of permit applications alters Kona office hours

As part of an ongoing effort to address a backlog in the processing of applications and permits at the Planning Department’s West Hawaii office in Kailua-Kona, the department said Monday it will begin to limit service hours with the public on a temporary basis.

Kapoho, Pohoiki areas still unsuitable for water restoration after lava

HILO — The county Department of Water Supply has no current plans to restore water service to Kapoho and the area around Pohoiki as lower Puna continues to recover from the 2018 eruption of Kilauea volcano, but was not “shutting the door” on a possible restoration in the future.

Drought recovery proving uneven

KAILUA-KONA — A large swath of Hawaii Island emerged from abnormally dry conditions and other areas got some reprieve from drought following above-average rainfall over many areas during July.

Raises planned for off-duty police

HILO — Hawaii Island police officers who provide services for private companies or other government agencies on their off-time could see payment for their services go up by as much as 50% over the next two years, under a special duty pay schedule that’s the focus of upcoming public hearings.
