Obituaries for Aug. 7

Edward Ikaku Awa, 85, of Middle Keei died June 30 at Tripler Army Medical Center. Born in South Kona, he was a U.S. Army retired chief warrant officer. Celebration of life noon Saturday, Aug. 17, at Big Game Fishing Clubhouse at Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona. Inurnment with military honors 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona. Casual attire; flowers welcome. Survived by sons, Kevin (Rose) Awa of Kona and Steven (Donna) Awa of Arizona; daughter, Mae Johnson of California; brother, Harold (Ehrentraud) Awa of Kona; sisters, Florence Awa Llanes of Keauhou, Margie (Tony) Amouguis of Kona, May Aiko Awa of Kailua-Kona and Gladys Nacis of Papaikou; companion, Ululani Cho of Captain Cook; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Striping work Wednesday on Lanihuli Street in Hilo

The county Department of Public Works Traffic Division will be re-striping the dead-end portion of Lanihuli Street near Kinoole Street in Hilo Wednesday, weather permitting. The work area will be coned off starting at 6:30 a.m. and work will be conducted from 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Analysis for emergency shelter coming

KAILUA-KONA — The Office of Environmental Quality Control received a draft analysis for the county’s planned emergency shelter and an affordable rental project in Kailua-Kona.

Police arrest Pahoa man on suspicion of killing uncle

Police arrested a 26-year-old Pahoa man on suspicion of second-degree murder after his uncle’s body was found with “apparent injuries to his head and body” early Monday morning in the middle of Highway 137 in lower Puna.

Police seek leads on theft suspect

Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect who allegedly stole $115 from a high schooler’s wallet at a retail store on Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona.

Trial in firefighter death delayed

KEALAKEKUA — The trial for a 21-year-old man accused of manslaughter and negligent homicide in the death of a Hawaii Fire Department captain has been pushed back.
