UH faculty group demands Lassner’s resignation

A coalition of University of Hawaii faculty calling itself “Mauna Kea Protectors at the University of Hawaii” said Saturday it sent a letter July 22 to UH President David Lassner calling for his resignation if he doesn’t meet certain demands of the group.

Kilauea recovery just beginning

A disaster recovery expert said Saturday that the Big Island is going to have to tell its story in a compelling way to get its share of federal recovery dollars after a 2018 that saw 700-plus homes destroyed by lava from Kilauea volcano and disastrous flooding from the remnants from Hurricane Lane.

Roy M. Mau, 70, of Mountain View died July 1 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a woodcarver for the former Kamaaina Woods in Honokaa and U.S. Navy veteran. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Survived by companion, Dayle Miyashiro of
Mountain View; sister, Robin (Derek) Hanzawa of Honolulu; brothers, Rod Mau of Honolulu and Richard (Fai) Mau Jr. of Indonesia; an uncle, nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

2 disturbances likely to become tropical storms

Two disturbances in the Eastern Pacific have 80% chances of becoming tropical storms within the next five days, according to forecasters with the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

Lau Ola gets OK for 3rd dispensary

The state Department of Health on Friday issued a formal notice to proceed to Lau Ola LLC, doing business as Big Island Grown Dispensaries, for its third licensed medical cannabis dispensary retail center after passing its final on-site inspection.
