Humane society hires new CEO

KAILUA-KONA — The Hawaii Island Humane Society has hired a new CEO as it moves forward with restructuring its management and operations with new leadership and resources.

Genki Sushi reopens today

KAILUA-KONA — Genki Sushi at Kona Commons reopened at 4 p.m. Friday, more than a month after state health officials shuttered the eatery after confirming complaints of cockroaches being seen inside the restaurant.

NHCH nurses, Queen’s reach tentative agreement

KAILUA-KONA — A tentative agreement has been reached between the union representing dozens of nurses at North Hawaii Community Hospital and The Queen’s Health Systems, averting a possible strike at the Waimea facility.

Add a name, subtract another from traffic fatality list

HILO — Police said Tuesday a man who died after being struck Friday by a pickup truck will be added to the year’s traffic fatality totals, but another who died in May of a heart attack that resulted in a single-vehicle crash will be subtracted.

Plane lands on Waikoloa Road; no injuries

KAILUA-KONA — Waikoloa Road between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Waikoloa Village reopened after crews removed a small aircraft that made an emergency landing earlier today.

Hawaii lawmakers, others urge passage of asset forfeiture bill

State Rep. Joy San Buenaventura of Puna said Tuesday civil assets forfeiture reform legislation she sponsored is in response to “innocent people whose property was seized because of legalized theft by the government.”
