New Navy destroyer to be named after late Sen. Inouye
The missile destroyer will be christened as the USS Daniel Inouye this weekend during a ceremony in Maine. Senator Mazie Hirono will speak at the ceremony and Inouye’s widow, Irene Hirano Inouye, will be the ship’s sponsor.
Kealoha told the judge that she acknowledged her right to defend herself in court, but would not be taking the stand as the trial comes to a close. Her co-defendants, husband Louis Kealoha and three police officers, have also declined to testify.
New invasive long-horned beetle attacking crops in Puna
The beetle, which is native to Australia, is starting to spread across the Big Island and has already damaged several different species of trees. Agriculture experts are concerned about how the new invasion will affect the local economy, as there is currently no known control method for the insects.

The American Heart Association names new national volunteer leaders
Raymond P. Vara Jr., president and chief executive officer of Hawaii Pacific Health in Honolulu, is the new chairman-elect, having previously served as treasurer. He is also chairperson of the Association’s Corporate Operations Coordinating Committee and has been a member of that committee since 2011. Vara was chairman of the Association’s former Pacific Mountain Affiliate from 2009 to 2011.
