Cleanups planned today for World Oceans Day

KAILUA-KONA — Events are scheduled around the world today in celebration of World Oceans Day, and that includes some opportunities for people on the island to show some love to the waters around them.

Kealoha corruption trial focuses on alleged fake notary

HONOLULU — Jurors in a corruption trial heard testimony Friday about an imaginary notary U.S. authorities say former Honolulu deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha invented and whose signature appears on documents she drafted for the uncle she’s accused of framing.

Trial set in hospital stabbing case

A 21-year-old Pahoa man accused of injuring four people during a violent, knife-wielding rampage March 20 at Hilo Medical Center pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted murder and other charges.

Marjorie M. Germano, 74, of Hilo died May 19 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honokaa, she was a retired packer for the former Pacific Tropical Produce. Visitation 5-6 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services at 6 p.m. Cremation to follow. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by husband, Harold J. Germano Sr. of Hilo; sons, Earl (Donna) De Silva of Kalopa and Lopaka (Nicole) De Silva of Honokaa; daughters, Mayleen Martin of Hilo, Natalie (Stephan) Young of Las Vegas, Jean (Nicholas) Garcia of Mountain View and Jane (Niem Tran) Ancheta of Keaau; stepsons, Harold (Michelle) Germano Jr. of Kona, Ollie (Vickie) Germano and Tom Germano of Mountain View; brothers, Morris Ancheta of North Carolina, Anthony (Benita) Ancheta of Waimea and Johnny (Geraldine) Ancheta of Paauhau; sisters, Alice Panui of Pearl City, Oahu, and Luana Kauwe of Hilo; 41 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Kanehailua named Hilo-Waiakea Complex Area superintendent

The state Board of Education on Thursday named Esther Kanehailua the Hilo-Waiakea Complex Area superintendent.
