Fire Department rescues two hikers

Two stranded hikers were rescued Tuesday afternoon from the rocky shoreline at the base of a cliff between Pololu Valley and Honokane Valley, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

Police: Barricaded suspect died of gunshot wounds

An autopsy found 42-year-old Bert Mercado, who died Nov. 27 after being shot by police officers during a barricade situation in Hawaiian Beaches, died of gunshot wounds, not of self-inflicted knife wounds, police said Tuesday.

Santa Claus has come to town

Leila-Rose Wilbur, 3, tries a taste of her candy cane after getting her picture taken with Santa Claus on Tuesday at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. Santa is available for pictures from noon-3:30 p.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. through Dec. 14, then from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Dec. 15-23, with a small break in the middle of the day to feed his reindeer. Santa also will be available from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Christmas Eve day, Dec. 24, at the plaza.
