County crises boosted budget savings
Hawaii County departments were so busy with natural disasters this year, they didn’t get a chance to spend all their budgets. Finance Director Deanna Sako told the County Council Finance Committee on Thursday that the county had almost $12 million left over from the fiscal year that ended June 30, plus another $15.3 million budgeted for the current year. West Hawaii Today.

Council advances Puna roads resolution
A room full of people displaced by the eruption in lower Puna had one request for Hawaii County on Thursday, help them get home. The testifiers were voicing support for a resolution before the County Council urging the county to make rebuilding Highway 132 a high priority, realign Government Beach Road and open the Railroad Avenue right of way to help residents access their property. Tribune-Herald.

Telescope officials maintain alternative site in Spain
The Thirty Meter Telescope may have been given the go-ahead by the Hawaii Supreme Court. But there’s still a lot that needs to happen before construction can take place on Mauna Kea.“That has always been plan B and we’ll keep that plan B in place,” says project spokesman Scott Ishikawa, “Just in the event you know for some reason or whatever reason TMT can’t be built on Mauna Kea.” Hawaii Public Radio.

Raptors take to skies above Big Island
Curious residents gathered Thursday at Hilo International Airport to look at four Hawaii Air National Guard fighter jets conducting training exercises on the Big Island. The jets, four F-22 Raptor aircraft, were brought from Oahu to conduct logistics capabilities training out of the Hilo airport from Thursday into Saturday.Tribune-Herald. Big Island Video News.
