Wife of defendant takes stand in murder trial

KEALAKEKUA — Eber Miranda-Garcia’s wife had a hard time recalling statements she made to police when she was questioned by prosecutors about what she witnessed the day before a Holualoa man was found dead in a coffee field three years ago.

Shelters open in West Hawaii as storm approaches

KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that five emergency shelters have been opened in North Kohala, South Kohala, North Kona and South Kona due to the potential effects of Hurricane Lane. No mandatory evacuation has been ordered.

Body recovered from Hilo fire

KAILUA-KONA — Approximately 1:58 p.m. Tuesday, the Hawaii Fire Department and the Hawaii Police Department responded to a reported brush fire on the roadside south of the Komohana and Ponahawai Street intersection in Hilo. Upon fire and police arrival, the burning lifeless body of an unidentified male had been discovered in a culvert on the mauka side of the road.
