One of the interests I pursue in my semi-retirement years is that of motorsports, particularly drag racing. Along with Geoff Lauer and Christopher Liberato, I’ve been serving at tower announcer for the Big Island Auto Club during its drag racing schedule. I began this part-time hobby back in 1990 when I first worked in the news department of KKBG-FM (KBIG-FM). Part of my duties is to report the results of the BIAC races and other events to the media.
Here are the results of the 11 August 2018 Test and Tune event held at the Hilo Drag Strip:
As a prelude and training activity prior to the 01-02 September 2018 Labor Day Drag Races (the 46th annual), the Big Island Auto Club held its 11 August 2018 “Test and Tune” event for drivers interested in participating in the Labor Day Drags at the Hilo Drag Strip.
Here are the results:
Fasted car on the track: Charelle Luiz of Hilo driving a rear engine digger She turned in a time of 8.07 seconds for a speed of 169 mph. Runner-Up: Chase Augustin of Hilo driving a Dodge Daytona. He turned in a time of 8.34 seconds for a speed of 162 mph.
A fast-paced Junior Dragster exhibition was put on by Kaimi Francis and Griffin Augustin who ran several test matches against each other. At the end of the day, Griffin won 2 out of 3 exhibition races.
The next BIAC race is the upcoming Labor Day Drags on 01-02 September 2018 at the Hilo Drag Strip.
