What protesters failed to do, lava has done.  According to a representative of Ormat Technologies, a substation and a warehouse at the Puna Geothermal Venture Power Plant have been destroyed by rapidly advancing lava flows.  The incursion occurred on Wednesday.

Ormat Technologies says damage to the PGV facility was extensive:

“The main access road to the plant has also been covered and blocked by lava. An alternative access road remains open. Two geothermal wellheads were destroyed on May 28.

The Puna geothermal plant was taken offline and evacuated soon after the Kilauea volcano began erupting on May 3.”

Volatile pentane fuel used by PGV turbines has been removed.
