Hawaii Department of Health official say the cold and flu season has arrived in Hawaii, and “it’s likely to get worse” as local clinics are reporting a “significant jump in the number of flu and cold cases compared to previous years.”

Dr. Bob Ruggieri adds that the current flu vaccine is only 80% effective, “but it’s still the best way to prevent the flu.”

Dr. Ruggieri says that even the best flu vaccine can’t protect against every strain of the infectious disease:

“The reason for that is it’s not that the flu vaccine doesn’t work. It’s designed to be effective against the most current strains of the flu, so if the CDC says these four strains are current and a fifth one comes to town, sort of speak, of course it’s not going to be effective against that one.”

Health officials are urging people to get the flu shot and to practice a higher level of personal hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when you sneeze, and staying away from infected persons.
