This article from Duane Vachon is something we all should read on this Independence Day. Vachon has done an excellent job of describing the history and mission of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which became one of the most highly decorated units of World War II. Just getting the unit formed was a major undertaking, considering that many Japanese families were interned in camps during the war.
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team distinguished itself in bloody battles through France and Italy, earning 9,486 Purple Hearts, eight Presidential Citations, and 21 Medals of Honor. The unit was comprised almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese ancestry, “who served with valor and distinction….” Casualties included 650 killed in action, 3,173 wounded–many more than once–and 67 remain missing in action.”
Remaining members of the 442nd are now in their 90s, with most of their comrades falling to the passage of time and age.
