The president of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association says the loss of the NFL Pro Bowl to Orlando, Florida “is a black eye to the state’s sports tourism sector.”  Mufi Hannemann, the former mayor of Honolulu, tells the Associated Press that Hawaii “should have leveraged is Pro Bowl relationship to bring a pre-season game to the islands.”

Opinion:

Considering the failing state of Aloha Stadium and the cost of airfare to bring teams and fans to Honolulu, a return of the Pro Bowl to Honolulu won’t happen anytime soon.

Local media, especially the “Honolulu Star-Advertiser” and the major Honolulu television stations, have been discussing the terrible state of Aloha Stadium for years.  I guess this time, the need wasn’t sufficiently urgent to get the stadium repaired or to build a new one.  It’s a matter of priorities.  I can’t really blame the NFL for locating the Pro Bowl closer to more modern stadiums and transportation hubs.  Orlando will certainly draw many fans, who will only have to drive to the stadium to see the game.  Perhaps, the NFL sees a Honolulu-based Pro Bowl as a losing proposition.  To put it quite crudely, it’s about the money.
