OHA goes silent on geothermal investment

Follow the money — if you can.

Great investigative article by "Hawaii Tribune-Herald" reporter Tom Callis.  If the Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) is expected to come clean about its preference for Ormat Technologies’s bid for new geothermal facility, why can’t the Office of Hawaiian Affairs do the same with its closed bid from Huena Power Consortium? Are rules supposed to be applied across the board?  Perhaps not in OHA’s case. OHA claims that information is confidential.  Isn’t it interesting that HELCO is single out for its bidding process, while OHA hides behind the confidentiality shield? Perhaps OHA doesn’t want a mainland company to dominate geothermal power generation on Hawaii Island, and would prefer a Native-Hawaiian-owned company to generate geothermal power.  If that’s the case, why not say so in the open?  Or as reporter Callis says, "Follow the money–if you can.  ‘Nothing like a double-standard where the public welfare is concerned.  Aloha, Russ.
