Tropical Storm Information Update For Thursday Oct. 16th At 12:00noon.
This is a Tropical Storm information update for Thursday October 16th at 12:00noon.
The National Weather Service Tropical Storm Watch for Hawaii Island remains in effect.
Due to the possible impacts of storm conditions and to insure the safety of our community the following closures and actions will be taken. Effective tomorrow, Friday October 17th the following parks will be closed:
All county beach parks and all state parks
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
In addition, the following school closures will be implemented effective tomorrow, Friday, October 17th:All public and charter schools
St. Joseph School
Kamehameha Schools Hawai’i Campus and all Kamehameha Preschools
Additionally, all inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities are canceled beginning today, through the weekend, resuming when schools reopen.For schools not listed please contact that campus or school directly for further information.

Tropical Storm Ana Information Update For Thursday October 16th At 7:30am.This is a Tropical Storm information update for Thursday October 16th at 7:30am.
The National Weather Service Tropical Storm Watch for Hawaii Island remains in effect.
Tropical Storm Ana was located approximately 500 miles east southeast of Hilo and moving west at 10 miles per hour. Presently the system is showing sustained winds of 60 miles per hour with higher gusts. In addition to the high winds, high surf and storm surge may be expected as well as heavy rains and thunder showers. We are asking Hawaii Island residents to monitor your local radio broadcasts for updates and to prepare for possible storm conditions which could begin to affect the Big Island by Friday. Residents in the shoreline communities of Punaluu in Kau and the Kalapana, Kapoho, and Pohoiki areas of Puna are advised to take precautions and to move to higher ground. Surf heights of 25 to 40 feet are currently forecasted for the southeast facing shores of Hawaii Island. In addition and as the storm system passes to the west of Hawaii Island high surf and other storm impacts may be experienced across parts of West Hawaii from South Kona through South Kohala. All shoreline residents are advised to take precautions and to prepare for high surf and storm surge run up.

Eruption Information Update For 10/16/14 At 7:15amThis is an eruption and lava flow Information Update for Thursday October 16th at 7:15 am
This morning’s assessment shows that the flow front appears to have stalled and has not advanced since yesterday. The flow front remains approximately 0.6 miles from the Apa’a Street area near the Pahoa Transfer Station. All burning activity is limited to vegetation that is in direct contact with the flow and there is no brush fire threat at this time. Smoke conditions were light to moderate this morning with light winds out of the northeast.
Current flow activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities and no evacuation is needed at this time. Area residents will be given adequate notice to safely evacuate should that be necessary.
The public is reminded that the flow is not visible and cannot be accessed from any public areas. Access to the Kaohe Homesteads subdivision will remain restricted to area residents only.

Here’s the latest lava flow and tropical storm update from Hawaii County Civil Defense. Public and Private Schools on Hawaii Island will be closed Friday, 17 October because of the storm. Public beach parks will be closed on Friday as well. Hawaii County Civil Defense will hold a community meeting today (Thursday) 16 October 2014, 6:30 p.m. at the Pahoa High School cafeteria.
