Solar energy is beginning to catch up to deficiencies in the Hawaiian Electric Company’s grid. HECO and the rest of its neighbor island subsidiaries have failed to anticipate the rapid growth of and demand for solar energy. The Public Utilities Commission has required the utility to provide plans on how it will adapt to this trend in renewable energy production. HECO and its companies will now have to play "catch up" and expedite permits for solar installations. HECO needs to implement "smart grid" technology as soon as possible. The transition will be expensive, inconvenient, and disruptive–something the utility should have anticipated in a world of diminishing fossil fuel resources. Aloha, Russ.
