Thanks to Jim Cantore for this video showing cleanup and recovery efforts on Hawaii Island after the passing of Tropical Storm Iselle through the Puna and Ka’u Districts of Hawaii Island. Hawaii County Civil Defense personnel, assisted by the Hawaii Army National Guard, private citizens, and CERT (community emergency response teams) volunteers are clearing several Puna and Ka’u subdivisions of fallen trees and storm debris. Many subdivision residents remain cut off from electricity and public services after the storm passed through their portion of Hawaii Island. The Hawaii Electric Light Company says power has been restored to all but 9,200 customers, “who have been warned by the utility not to expect their lights on soon. Power restoration could take up to a week or more, depending on how many transmission lines have been damaged and the number of trees that must be removed before utility crews can enter distressed areas. Hawaii County Civil Defense officials have set up emergency distribution centers in Pahoa and Mountain View for ice, water, tarps, and other emergency supplies. Residents living in Kapoho, Mt. View, Leilani Estates, Nanawale Estates, Orchidland Estates, and in Pahoa town were especially hard hit. Aloha, Russ.
